Recently, Phase II of an extra-large artificial intelligence computing industrial park in East China completed the acceptance and delivery of all backup power equipment. The project deployed 12 units of MTU 4000 series20V4000G14F 10.5kV high-voltage diesel generator sets in a dedicated independent power station of the park, providing round-the-clock emergency power support for AI server clusters, liquid cooling systems, computer room monitoring equipment and fire linkage systems.
The computing park houses over 100,000 AI training servers that undertake high-value businesses including large model training and intelligent computing scheduling. Even a power cut lasting dozens of seconds will trigger server shutdowns, data loss and suspension of computing tasks, resulting in massive economic losses. Therefore, the project set stringent standards for the generator sets in terms of startup speed, continuous load capacity and long-term stability.
Core Advantages of MTU Generator Sets for Computing Rooms
1.Ultra-Fast Startup and Seamless Power Switchover
The units can reach 100% full load within 9 seconds after cold start. Matched with intelligent ATS dual power switch cabinets, they complete power transfer the moment grid power fails, fully complying with the Tier 4 highest power supply safety standard for domestic data centers. Equipped with two independent startup circuits, they eliminate the risk of startup failure.
2.High-Voltage Design Reduces Line Losses
The adopted 10.5kV high-voltage output models cut long-distance power transmission losses by 32% compared with conventional low-voltage units. Additional step-up transformers are not required, and the footprint of the power station is reduced by 20%, fitting the compact layout of high-density computing parks.
3.Stable Long-Term Continuous Operation
The MTU 4000 series features an overhaul interval of up to 25,000 operating hours and supports 72 hours of non-stop standby operation. Custom enhanced heat dissipation kits are configured for enclosed heat-dissipation environments of computer rooms, enabling stable long-term operation above 40°C amid concentrated heat emission from server rooms.
4.Compatible with Eco-Friendly Fuels and Compliant with Emission Standards
The complete units meet China’s National Stage IV non-road emission standards and can directly blend HVO renewable hydrogenated vegetable oil fuel. They deliver high power output while lowering carbon emissions, aligning with the park’s green and low-carbon construction targets.
5.Intelligent Remote Monitoring & Maintenance
Each unit is equipped with an integrated intelligent controller that connects to the park’s smart energy management platform. It monitors hundreds of operating parameters in real time, including water temperature, oil pressure, load, exhaust conditions and fuel consumption, and gives early warnings of potential faults such as filter aging and oil pipeline leakage to realize unattended operation and maintenance.
Project Background
China’s AI computing infrastructure is currently under intensive construction, and demand for highly reliable high-power backup power supplies from computing parks and intelligent computing centers keeps rising. Conventional small and medium-sized generator sets suffer from insufficient load capacity and short overhaul cycles, making them unfit for 7×24-hour uninterrupted computing services. Thanks to numerous global data center application cases, high-power MTU diesel generator sets have become the mainstream backup power choice for high-end domestic computing projects.
After multiple rounds of on-site working condition comparisons and 72-hour continuous full-load testing, the Phase II project of the East China computing park finally selected complete MTU high-voltage generator sets. Adopting parallel control design, the equipment can automatically adjust the number of running units according to real-time park loads, balancing power supply safety and fuel economy.
Current Market Application Status
Dozens of large intelligent computing centers and financial data rooms across the Yangtze River Delta, Chengdu-Chongqing region, Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen are equipped with MTU diesel generator sets, covering the full power range from 300kW to 3600kW. The medium and small-power 2000 series is widely used in small and medium industrial parks and communication hubs, while the high-power 4000 series high-voltage models serve ultra-large computing facilities, semiconductor plants and sterile pharmaceutical workshops requiring first-class critical load power supply.
