Rolls-Royce mtu Doubles Production Capacity of Diesel Backup Generator Sets by Expanding US Plant

In July 2026, Rolls-Royce Power Systems announced the completion of a $24 million expansion project at its plant in Mankato, Minnesota. The facility’s production capacity for land-based mtu diesel backup generator sets will double by the end of the year, targeting critical power supply markets including North American data centers, hospitals and industrial sites. The high-power diesel units assembled here are powered by mtu Series 4000 12V4000G14Fdiesel engines manufactured at the South Carolina plant, exclusively for non-marine and non-gas land-based emergency power applications.

Driven by the continuous expansion of computing infrastructure across North America, data centers have seen surging demand for uninterrupted backup power. Over 25% of data centers in the United States adopt mtu diesel generator sets as standby power sources. After the expansion, the production line can shorten delivery cycles for containerized generator sets.
