Rolls-Royce Power Systems has unveiled its new mtu 20V4000 L64 gas generator set, engineered for the 60Hz North American market and scheduled for commercial availability starting from 2026. The product targets mission-critical backup power for AI data centers as well as rapid grid stabilization applications.
Powered by a 20-cylinder mtu Series 4000 gas engine, this genset delivers 2.8MW electrical power and can reach full load within only 45 seconds after startup command. Its power output is 10% higher compared with the prior generation. The updated design removes the gearbox, which greatly reduces footprint and helps data center operators save valuable floor space. Current global standard mtu Series 4000 gas gensets offer a 120-second fast-start capability, while this new 45-second variant is specially developed for North American AI computing facilities.
Kevin McKinney, Vice President of Powergen Sales Americas at Rolls-Royce Power Systems, commented that the boom in AI computing infrastructure raises higher requirements on response speed and reliability of backup power. Natural gas is widely available and economically competitive across North America. This 45-second fast-start solution can restore power immediately upon grid outage, preventing server shutdown and protecting data integrity.
In terms of fuel flexibility and sustainability, the mtu 20V4000 L64 runs on pipeline natural gas, biogas and biomethane. It is H2-ready and capable of hydrogen blending operation for future low-carbon transition. The engine features a long time-between-overhaul interval up to 84,000 hours, lowering the total cost of ownership for critical infrastructure. The genset complies with EPA emission standards, and optional SCR after-treatment is available to meet strict local environmental permits.
Beyond AI data centers, the genset is also suitable for hospitals, airports and heavy industrial sites with critical loads. It can serve as distributed generation to provide grid support, compensating power fluctuations caused by wind and solar renewable energy.
