100 Units of MTU Silent Generator Sets Shipped to South African Mines for Continuous Mining Power Supply

A domestic professional genset manufacturer fulfilled a standby power supply order for a large open-pit gold mine in South Africa. A total of 100 containerized silent diesel generator sets have been delivered, all equipped with MTU engines specially designed for power generation to secure power supply for mining, ore dressing and tailings treatment processes.

The power grid in local South Africa lacks stability, with frequent voltage fluctuations and sudden blackouts in remote mining zones. Any power failure will shut down excavators, crushing and screening lines, and underground ventilation systems, leading to heavy production losses. After rounds of full-load high-temperature and dust resistance tests, the project contractor finally adopted complete gensets powered by MTU engines18V2000G65.

These gensets range from 280 kVA to 720 kVA, with special upgrades for high temperature and heavy dust in Africa. Multi-stage dust filters are installed on air intake systems, and cooling systems feature enlarged heat dissipation capacity, enabling full-power stable operation at an ambient temperature of 50℃ without power derating.

The electronic control system delivers fast response: the units start and switch within 5 seconds after mains failure. Their load acceptance performance meets ISO 8528 G3 standards, supporting stable parallel operation of dozens of units to match high simultaneous power demand of multiple production lines. Equipped with thickened silent enclosures and silencer exhaust systems, the running noise is controlled below 73 decibels on site.

In terms of fuel compatibility, the engines work with standard diesel and HVO renewable biodiesel, adapting to local fuel supply while helping mining operators cut carbon emissions. The standard service interval extends to 600 hours, greatly lowering transportation and labor costs from frequent maintenance in remote mines.

The general manager of the genset manufacturer stated that the company has long exported MTU-powered gensets to mining projects across Africa and Southeast Asia, with standardized complete solutions customized for harsh mining environments. After delivering this batch of 100 units, the enterprise has signed a long-term annual supply framework with the local mining group.

A person in charge of MTU Asia Pacific Power Generation said mines, oil & gas fields and large industrial production lines are key target sectors. The full lineup of power generation engines keeps upgrading for better heat resistance, dust resistance and extended service intervals. Supported by spare parts warehouses and local certified technicians throughout Africa, 24/7 on-site emergency maintenance is available for overseas mines all year round.
