Rolls-Royce Launches Upgraded mtu Series 1600 Generator Sets for Global 50Hz Standby Power Market

Rolls-Royce Power Systems has released upgraded mtu Series 1600 diesel generator sets targeting the 50Hz grid market. The power output is increased by up to 40% compared with the previous generation, reaching nearly 1000kW peak power. It delivers industry-leading power density within its power class, offering a new generation of emergency power solutions for commercial & industrial facilities, telecom sites, hospitals and overseas infrastructure projects.

The new mtu Series 1600 16V4000G23gensets are available in open unit and enclosed power unit versions. The enclosed type is an all-in-one plug-and-play module integrated with fuel tank and control systems. It features easy installation and high weather protection for outdoor deployment. Boasting excellent load acceptance capability, the gensets can start and pick up load rapidly upon mains failure to guarantee uninterrupted power for mission-critical loads. The units run on HVO sustainable fuel to cut greenhouse gas emissions and support the global low-carbon transition.

Power engines of this series are supplied to overseas B2B OEM system integrators for genset assembly. Compact design reduces footprint and facilitates containerized shipment for export projects in Africa, Southeast Asia and other regions. Optional exhaust after-treatment packages are available to meet emission certifications of various countries.

Medium-power standby power demand keeps rising for telecom base stations, small power plants and factories across 50Hz regions. The mtu Series 1600 fills the power gap below the Series 2000 and completes the product portfolio. Supported by mtu’s worldwide spare parts network and remote monitoring system, maintenance workload for overseas projects can be greatly reduced.

Industry analysis shows that the expansion of microgrid and off-grid projects drives steady demand for medium-power high-reliability generator sets. Rolls-Royce will continue to upgrade the mtu Series 1600 portfolio, develop hybrid and microgrid-compatible solutions, deepen its presence in the 50Hz export market and capture opportunities brought by infrastructure construction in emerging economies.
