12 Sets of MTU High-Voltage Containerized Diesel Generator Units Accepted and Delivered for Large Cloud Computing Center in Jiangsu

1. Project Overview

A large commercial IDC data center in Jiangsu has completed the construction of its backup power supply system. The project procures 12 sets of high-voltage containerized diesel generator units fitted with MTU 16V2000G65 prime movers. All units run on diesel only with no gas-powered equipment adopted. Serving as the primary emergency power supply for the data center, the whole system complies with China’s 50Hz mains power standard. All equipment adopts an integrated outdoor container design incorporating noise reduction, rain and dust resistance, heat dissipation, integrated fuel tanks and intelligent control cabinets.

2. Detailed Equipment Configuration

Mature MTU power engines are paired with high-voltage generators to match the high-voltage power distribution system of large data centers and cut line power loss.

All units feature fully enclosed soundproof containers, which can be directly installed outdoors on the campus without the need for dedicated civil engine rooms.

Centralized fuel supply pipelines and an intelligent multi-unit parallel control system are equipped to realize synchronous start-up and shutdown of all units as well as automatic balanced load distribution.

3. Covered Power Supply Scope

Once grid power fails, the generator sets start rapidly and connect to the grid to stably power core loads of the data center, including server computing clusters, constant-temperature precision air conditioning, high and low voltage power distribution rooms, fire protection systems, security monitoring, emergency lighting and operation & maintenance control equipment. The configuration prevents server shutdown and data loss caused by power outages and meets China’s protection standards against power cuts for high-tier data centers. The project passed a full 72-hour full-load continuous operation test plus multiple simulated power failure start-stop tests.

4. Advantages of MTU Selection

MTU prime movers deliver robust stability under long-duration full-load operation, suited to the round-the-clock standby status of data centers, with long overhaul intervals and lower maintenance frequency.

The units perform reliably across wide temperature ranges, enabling stable startup inside outdoor containers amid hot and humid summers as well as cold and damp winters in Jiangsu.

Both conventional diesel and HVO sustainable fuel can be used interchangeably, allowing the data center to switch fuels as needed to reduce carbon emissions.

Proven multi-unit parallel technology ensures minimal voltage and frequency fluctuations during coordinated operation of the 12 units, protecting delicate server hardware from damage.

5. Project Significance

This project sets a benchmark case for MTU diesel generator deployment at mid-to-high-end data centers across East China. Numerous newly built industrial park data centers and cloud computing parks nationwide reference this configuration, balancing convenient outdoor installation, reliable power supply and long-term maintenance costs. Following acceptance, all units remain on standby 24/7 all year round to guarantee uninterrupted digital services within the park.
