Avoid wax formation in MTU diesel generator set

Diesel paraffin formation is one of the "difficult and complicated problems" encountered by diesel generating units. Once the phenomenon of wax formation, it will have a significant impact on diesel generators: light power shortage, heavy direct ignition. What's more, getting rid of the wax is nerve-wracking and laborious, so how can you prevent and fix this annoying condition?

There are two common types of diesel wax formation: one is caused by low temperature oil, and the other is caused by poor diesel quality.

1. Wax formation caused by low temperature: diesel contains quantitative wax (that is, n-alkanes). When the temperature is reduced, these wax will gradually precipitate and form wax crystals. Usually, the content of n-alkanes in diesel oil is about 15% ~ 30%, when 0.5% ~ 2.0% paraffin is precipitated, it can lead to the solidification of diesel oil (that is, wax formation), and the wax formation at this time is a normal phenomenon.

2. Wax formation caused by poor diesel quality: regular diesel oil is smelted for crude oil. In the process of diesel production, additives will be used in strict accordance with national standards. Informal diesel (" small oil "), on the other hand, uses waste plastics, tires and oil to reduce costs, and uses excessive additives to make it look and smell like regular diesel. These "unknown" impurities will be filtered by the filter, and over time form a layer of "paste" on the surface of the filter element, which is the so-called "oil wax". This form of wax formation is abnormal phenomenon, even at high temperature (about 30℃) still exists.

Diesel wax deposition will mainly cause low pressure pipeline blockage, resulting in weak oil supply.

(1) Normal wax formation phenomenon (that is, low temperature causes paraffin precipitation in diesel) : it will make diesel solidifying, liquidity is poor, and even plug the whole low pressure pipeline (tank to low pressure pump) in serious cases.

(2) Abnormal wax formation phenomenon (filter filter out informal diesel impurities) : will form a layer of paste on the surface of the filter element, resulting in a rapid rise in filter resistance, will eventually cause the filter resistance is too large, resulting in weak oil supply. Diesel generators lack of power, serious blockage, and even cause automatic flameout, unable to leave the car.

The normal wax formation phenomenon is caused by low ambient temperature, so it can be thawed with boiling water to melt the solidified diesel oil in the pipeline and filter into liquid. But remember not to use open flame to bake the tank and filter. After thawing, in order to avoid wax formation again, need to switch to the correct label of diesel. For abnormal wax formation, if the filter element is pasted, a new filter element needs to be replaced, and the diesel in the tank should be replaced with regular diesel.

① According to different environmental temperatures, use the correct label of diesel.

② Use the main and auxiliary fuel tanks correctly. Before stopping, it is necessary to switch the fuel tank to the diesel with the correct label. When the whole low pressure pipeline and fuel system are full of the diesel with the correct label, the engine should be turned off and stopped.

③ Pay attention to the weather changes in the road at any time to avoid the sudden drop in temperature leading to diesel wax.

④ Use regular diesel and avoid using low-cost oil refining.

Although diesel paraffin does not cause physical damage to engine and diesel generator, it can cause serious impact. The key to solve the problem is to select the proper diesel with the correct label according to the ambient temperature.
